Mum’s returning to workforce? Retrain in the fitness industry

Personal Trainer Careers are so hot right now!   It’s a career path suited to many people including mums who are keen to get back into the workforce and want to work flexible hours around family commitments.

Two of my friends got into the personal training field after their children had started school.  Prior to this, they had started to get a bit more time to themselves so started a regular routine of going to the gym - which naturally evolved for both of them into studying and working towards being a personal trainer.   It’s a very rewarding career in that they get to set their own personal fitness goals and achieve them, earn an income from something they love and be able to pass on their expertise and advice to their clients.  From an outsider’s perspective, I would definitely choose either of these girls to train me - their resolve and perseverance have paid off with inspiring results!

Here are some tips and encouragement for women who are considering entering this profession:

  • Research the type of qualification you want – you can craft your career around personal interests such as massage, group fitness or pilates instruction
  • Set study and business goals including a timeline to keep you on track!
  • Find a trusted business mentor or friend in the profession who can coach and support you
  • Write down a plan about how you will manage out of school care with your children.  Enlist the help of your family and friends to assist with childcare as you build your career.

Remember, managing a household and looking after children is a business in itself!  Many of the skills gained in this important role are transferable and equip you for a successful personal training business.
