Exercise for the older generation

Become a fitness instructor and you’ll be able to make a difference to people regardless of what age they are!   In a world obsessed with youth and all things young, new and wrinkle-free, it’s no wonder the older generation might be feeling a little left out!  At any age, we should all be able to live healthy lives that include a quality nutritious diet and exercise programme.  A quote from one online source says “inactivity, not age causes most of our health problems”.

There are many ways in which everyone, including the older generation can fit in exercise in their daily routine and it doesn’t have to be at the gym.  Seated exercise, DVD’s, Wii Fit and walking are good examples of exercise that can be done while at home.  Daily household activities can also be considered exercise such as vacuuming, gardening and mowing.  Exercise for the older generation helps to reduce cognitive decline, improves mood, gives structure and purpose to the day and assists with ailments such as arthritis or rheumatic problems.

Sit and be Fit is a community initiative run by a local Church that include seated exercises and light weights to help people build strength and stamina to carry out their daily tasks more easily.  Building the fitness levels up incrementally is the key to success.

Regular exercise can have a positive effect on a person’s balance, co-ordination and mobility, therefore improving quality of life.  With a regular exercise program, improvements in fitness will help a person gain a sense of achievement and enhanced self-worth.
