Changing Careers
Lois McMahon is proof that it’s never too late to change your current career path into a positive and rewarding career in the health and fitness industry. “People looked at me with disbelief when I told then what I wanted to do and 12 months down the track I’m here living the dream!”
Before deciding to study personal training with the Australian Institute of Fitness, Lois worked as a Hansard court reporter for the South Australian Government. She had always had a lifelong interest in health and fitness and this is what prompted her to research a career in this field. She also suffered with neck and shoulder problems.
Lois recommends that anyone interested in a career in this field should just “go for it”! The opportunities that have arisen since she qualified with her certificate 4 in fitness and massage have opened doors into a positive working environment with many opportunities. She says many workplaces out there are negative and stressful whereas in the gym it’s always positive, “People are so friendly and it’s such a motivating industry to work in”.
On the final day of her course at the institute, Lois had two job offers on the table. She is now working as a massage therapist, personal trainer and group fitness instructor with Adelaide Fitness solutions. Lois says gaining a qualification with The Institute has given her a stepping stone into a career that she wished she’d known about years ago. She credits them with giving her the support, encouragement and skills necessary to succeed.
Lois studied the Master Trainer Program with the Australian Institute of Fitness and says that the two strands - massage and personal training - are complementary . She says that she gets massage clients coming in and deciding to do a personal training session and her personal training clients often get a massage for helping with muscle aches after intense training sessions.
