Monty was a leader, an innovator, an educator and a practitioner who helped to establish and then evolve the fitness industry in Australia. His professional passion was to see the formation of one single, strong Fitness Industry Association in Australia representing fitness businesses, fitness professionals, training organisations and fitness suppliers.

Monty’s association with the fitness industry started in 1984 when he was involved in the establishment of the national Australian Fitness Advisory Council (AFAC) which he then chaired until 1997. In 1998 he became the national president of the newly formed Fitness Australia and in 1999 he became its CEO, a position he held until 2001. Monty was also instrumental in the development of the national ‘Fitness Leader’ Registration and re-registration scheme and the Fitness Industry Training Package that is the foundation of what is now delivered by training providers around the country.

In addition he served on many other fitness industry boards and committees while establishing his own training and education business, the Canberra campus of the Australian Institute of Fitness. And, of course, he played a leading role in the development of the national Australian Institute of Fitness.

Despite his many roles, Monty still managed to find time to work as a fitness trainer five times a week. He was truly a fitness industry legend and is greatly missed.
