The growing role of Fitness Professionals within the Health Sector
?
The role of Fitness Professionals within the health sector is growing, both in demand and in the range of situations in which their skills can be utilised.
Demand for the skills possessed by Fitness Professionals has increased in recent times largely due to the recent increases in chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. These diseases, among others have been found to be associated with sedentary behaviours, poor nutrition and a range of other factors (HeartMoves 2004).
Though diagnosis of such a condition is not within the scope of a Fitness Professional, they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to assist in treating them. Under the supervision of a Health Professional such as a Physiotherapist, Podiatrist or General Practitioner, Fitness Professionals can facilitate safe and effective exercise programs to improve fitness, strength, muscle tone and flexibility.
NSW Health recommends that in situations where exercise is appropriate in treating cardiovascular disease, it should be delivered by health professionals in a health and fitness setting. Those who choose to deliver such a service as a personal trainer can also engage the services of a nutritionist to develop a full lifestyle plan. The benefits of doing such include greater motivation for clients, more personalised service, maximised fat loss through exercise and correct diet, and finally a potential for decreased risk of injury due to adequate supervision.
Some may argue that there is no need for Fitness Professionals to assist in such treatments, and that such a role can be adequately filled by Physiotherapists and General Practitioners. However recent studies have suggested that Health Professionals feel that they are unable to implement healthy behaviours to a satisfactory level, and that this could be improved through collaboration with the Health and Fitness industry (Rea et al 2004).
It is evident that there is an immediate need for Fitness Professionals in combating a varied range of chronic illnesses; and this need is only set to increase in the near future. Australia was recently declared the most obese nation, while related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease are also expected to rise.
Fitness Professionals will play a key role in the fight against sedentary behaviours and their related diseases. Whether it be as gym instructors and personal trainers working with their clients, or working in conjunction with other Health Professionals, Fitness Professionals currently have a significant and growing role to play in the health sector.
